Open Access Ebooks
There are some large ebook collections that are available for free on the internet. Here are a few:
- The Online Books PageThis is the most comprehensive site I have found, "Listing over 35,000 free books on the Web". Updated regularly. Notable for its array of historical texts and periodicals of all kinds.
- LibriVoxLibriVox volunteers record chapters of books in the public domain and release the audio files back onto the net. Our goal is to make all public domain books available as free audio books. MP3 files.
- Internet Text ArchiveMany books are scanned and contributed by college and public libraries that want to make scarce volumes in their collections more available.
- Project GutenbergA non-profit collection of digitized collection of books, texts, and cultural works.
- Google BooksNot all of the books offer a full view, but you can limit your search to those that do and it's a good way to search the text of a book, even if you need to look for the full text in the library or request it through Interlibrary Loan.
- ManyBooks.netOver 27,00 free books, including audiobooks.
- OpenCulture Free Audio booksMostly MP3 files. Also has poetry, podcasts, language lessons, and other categories.
Subscription Services
Before paying for any book the library does not own, consider requesting a copy through Interlibrary Loan. Otherwise, here are a few websites where you can subscribe/pay for ebooks (or audiobooks):
- AudibleFind recent audiobooks; this site is a partner to Amazon and works on a subscription basis.
- AmazonYou don't need a Kindle, there's a free app to download to make them readable on a PC.
- Kobo BooksWide selection of popular fiction and non-fiction. Use with the free app on any device.
