Locating the Maps & Atlases collection

The Maps & Atlases collection is located on the B2 level of Boatwright Library

All maps and atlases can be circulated. Take the material to the Information Desk at the front door of the library to check them out. 

You may also check out a map carrier if you need one.

Locating a map within the collection

  • World maps The majority of the library maps are cataloged and assigned Library of Congress (LC) call numbers.
    • E.g. If you were searching for a map of Afghanistan, the LC call number would be in the G7630's map drawer.
    • The map cabinets are labeled with the LC call number range that each drawer contains.
  • Atlases are shelved on the bookcases to the left of the map cabinets.
  • USGS 7.5 minute or 1 : 24,000 series topographic maps of Virginia are filed alphabetically by quadrangle name.  A map showing each quandrangle is filed in the first drawer of the topographic maps.
  • Special map collections include:
    • Some 1 : 50 000 series maps of Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia
    • Some 1 : 50 000 series maps of Virginia counties
    • Miscellaneous Virginia maps
    • Maps of troop movement in the Second Battle of Manassas
    • Early sailing cutters
    • World War II news maps
