ELECTRONIC BOOKS: E-Books on the Web

Links to Other E-Book websites

All the links below are to free or subscription services on the web. These are not library subscriptions.

Free Books

These sites offer the texts of books without charge.  Most of the books are older texts, no longer under copyright, and much of the digitizing has been done by volunteers.

  • The Online Books Page
This is the most comprehensive site I have found, "Listing over 35,000 free books on the Web". Updated regularly. Notable for its array of historical texts and periodicals of all kinds.
  • Project Gutenberg
One of the original online text projects, "where you can download over 30,000 free ebooks to read on your PC, Kindle, Sony Reader, iPhone or other device."

Subscription-Based/ Pay for Use Services

  • Podiobooks
This site has interesting way to get audio books; they offer complete books in episodic form so you can get just a chapter at a time via RSS or by iTunes; in addition, you can simply click and listen to a story online.

  • Kobo Books
Wide selection of popular fiction and non-fiction. Use with the free app on any device.
Books for a wide array of devices.
