Public Domain & Creative Commons Images

As students, you typically don't have to worry about copyrighted images on your research products, as there are legal exceptions in place for students and educational projects (also called "fair use"). However, if you plan on using images or visual content beyond reproductions of your primary sources, consider using images in the public domain and those with (select) Creative Commons licenses. These are images that anyone has the legal right to reuse, reproduce, and remix. This is especially useful for those looking to pursue future academic research and writing, or those interested in web design/digital humanities projects.

For additional questions on copyright and its applicability to research, you can speak with Kyle Jenkins or you can take a look at the UR Library's Copyright and Fair Use guide

*Note: The above description of copyright should not be considered legal advice, nor is it meant to be considered a definitive statement about students' use of copyrighted or public domain images and other content.
