We are so happy to have you as a student employee in the General Services Department at Boatwright Memorial Library! Student employees are integral to library functions and services on campus. In this LibGuide you will find a collection of helpful tips and information related to student employment and working in our department.

Announcements and Updates

Please note: in accordance with the University's updated COVID-19 protocol and mask policy, you are no longer required to wear a face covering while in public spaces of the library, such as the stacks. Masks are no longer required in the library at large or the Resource Sharing office. However, this is subject to change as we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic situation. Please continue to practice healthy habits - sanitize shared tools and spaces at the end of your shift (i.e., the student desk and keyboard) and stay home if you are sick. If you cannot make it to work or have tested positive for COVID-19, please notify your supervisor(s) immediately.

General Services Student Assistant

Pay: $12.00 (Level 1), Effective August 21, 2021

Job Statement:

The University Libraries General Services Student Assistant (GSSA) performs a variety of tasks directly related to the operation of the General Services Division at Boatwright Library. Students perform vital functions such as pulling materials for resource sharing, processing mail and materials, as well as digital scanning. Position works largely independently with feedback and direction from supervisor. Attention to detail and independent problem solving are crucial.

Essential Functions/Specific Duties:

  • Locates and retrieves library materials
  • Opens and distributes incoming mail and packages from mail room
  • Manages basic resource sharing operations and workflows
  • Securely packs items for shipment via UR Document Delivery or UPS
  • Runs on-campus errands to other branches and departments at UR
  • Scans items for loan or other use
  • Performs other unit duties and special projects as assigned
  • Participates in regular, shared stack maintenance to keep materials in good order
  • Monitors printers and other library equipment to ensure good working order
  • Conducts library building rounds to make sure facilities are in good working order

Job Specifications and Qualifications:

  1. Employee must be a currently-enrolled UR student (undergraduate or graduate program including law school) in good academic standing
  2. Must possess the ability to pay attention to details, solve problems, and think critically.
  3. Must be able to lift and shelve objects weighing up to 30 lbs.
  4. Must be able to work independently and follow written instructions when necessary.
  5. Must communicate clearly and in a timely manner timely using both verbal skills and e-mail with library staff.
  6. Good attendance and timeliness are crucial and deviations from the schedule (delayed arrival or missed shifts) must be reported to supervisors as soon as possible.
