This LibGuide provides links to a variety of sources related to the care, study, and consideration of African American cemeteries in the Richmond Area. Much of the work is the result of the [East End] Cemetery Collaboratory, a cross-institutional faculty learning community supported by the Center for Civic Engagement and Virginia Commonwealth University. Members of the Collaboratory are faculty and staff at Richmond institutions of higher education, community organizations, and members of the descendent community.

- Cemetery Collaboratory WebsiteThe Collaboratory formed as a learning community in 2017. The Collaboratory’s mission is to bring together faculty, staff, students, organizations, and community partners in Richmond, Virginia, to document and support African American history and culture via the region’s cemeteries. We aim to produce place-based knowledge that contributes to a community dialogue about caring for our collective past. Our work seeks to restore the commemorative functions of historic African American cemeteries and to recognize the stories of the people buried therein. We hope our work can inspire future collaborations toward these ends.
- Bonner Center for Civic Engagement Collaboratory Page"In 2017, faculty from UR and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), along with members of the Friends of East End, formed the East End Cemetery Collaboratory which centered around East End Cemetery, an historic African American burial ground in Henrico County and the City of Richmond.
The Collaboratory has since expanded its focus to other African American cemeteries in our region and aims to produce place-based knowledge that contributes to a community dialogue about our collective past."
